ESC Goalkeeper Training Program and Philosophy

Edina Soccer Club offers the most comprehensive goalkeeper training program in all of club soccer in Minnesota. It is built on the philosophy that goalkeepers need frequent contacts with goalkeeper trainers, specialized sessions to provide instruction in tactical and technical concepts, and above all a consistent supportive environment and group of coaches who understand the challenges of being a competitive goalkeeper. We strive to provide all of this for our goalkeepers through the following programming with no extra cost for families.

Topic-Based Training Sessions

Once each week across all seasons the ESC GK staff runs group sessions that focus on a weekly topic (e.g. shot-stopping, 1v1 saves, box management, tactical organization...) and goalkeepers are welcome to attend whenever it fits within their schedules. ESC makes every effort to schedules these outside of normal team training hours, and these sessions are staffed with multiple trainers so goalkeepers are still working in small groups with similar age and level players.

Daily Training in the Team Setting

During the indoor months (November-April) whenever any of our U13-U19 teams are on the field we have a goalkeeper trainer present. When goalkeepers arrive at their sessions they check in with their team coaches and then begin their session with a goalkeeper trainer. When the teams are ready to add the goalkeepers into their sessions they rejoin their teams and the trainer works with one or more of them within the team environment. The aim of these contacts is to provide repetitions and address technical areas introduced in the Topic-Based sessions. Depending on each team's session plans, goalkeepers may do anything from a short warm-up to a full 45-60 minutes with the trainer in this setting.

Trainer Visits to Teams

During the outdoor months (May-October) our staff goalkeeper coaches are assigned a group of teams that they visit regularly to check in with the goalkeepers to support them and address any topics they feel they need to spend more time on.

Camps and Additional Events

ESC runs summer day camps and occasional goalkeeper-specific events to bring together groups of goalkeepers in supportive environments that allow them to learn and compete outside of the pressure of the team environment. These are the only events that may include extra registration costs, but financial aid is always available and cost should never be a prohibitive factor for anyone's participation.

Self Training Resources

From physical training to additional technical training that goalkeepers can do without the help of a coach or trainer, it is important that our goalkeepers understand the role that self-training will play in their development and have access to resources to help them build training habits and effective self-training sessions. The link below provides some examples and a template for self-training sessions that goalkeepers can utilize to build a program that will help them grow outside of the club environment.
