Minnesota recently passed a "Concussion Law" which requires all public and private athletic associations to implement concussion training and education to improve player safety and establish safe return-to-play policies for athletes who sustain a concussion.
The law mandates that ALL coaches, sports directors and officials receive concussion training and education immediately, and then at three-year intervals thereafter. Per the law, coaches must remove an athlete from activity if they exhibit signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion and/or are suspected of sustaining a concussion. The law also requires a doctor's signature to return to play if an athlete is removed due to a concussion or is showing signs or symptoms of a concussion.
The concussion education for coaches, directors and officials is an online video training session developed by the CDC. Follow the link below to the coach training module. Parents and athletes do not have to complete the training.
http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/Training/HeadsUpConcussion.html
If you are an ESC coach, assistant or referee, you are required to complete the CDC's training module by September 15, 2011. the coach-training process involves watching a few short videos and then completing a brief, interactive quiz at the end of each segment. The entire training module will take about 45 minutes to complete. After completing the test, participants are offered the opportunity to print out a Certificate of Completion. Users should use a screen capture to save the certificate on their desktop or print and scan the certificate to create a digital file. Certificates of Completion must be emailed to ESC Administrator, Ann Buratti, at amburatti@aol.com.
Parents, players, coaches and officials should print more information about the nature and risks of concussions from the CDC at www.cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/Youth.html and click on the appropriate link for fact sheets for parents, athletes and coaches.
COACHES and REFEREES:
1. Follow the link above and complete the online training by September 15, 2011.
2. Screen capture or print and scan your Certificate of Completion
3. Email your Certificate of Completion to Ann Buratti at amburatti@aol.com
4. Repeat the online testing every 3 years.

All scheduled games will be played rain or shine, unless lightning is spotted in the game area. All players are directed to show up to all scheduled games, even if the weather looks daunting. The decision to play or not play will be made at the field by the Referee.
If the City of Edina closes fields in the event of over-saturated conditions, the club will notify Coaches and Managers by 3 or 4pm in the afternoon via email. A notice will also be posted here if timing and access allow. If you have not heard from your coach or manager, please plan on showing up to play. NOTE: fields may be closed on a case by case basis. i.e. Creek Valley fields may be closed for the day, but Lewis fields may be playable. Don't assume that all fields are closed unless you hear that is the case.
ESC is collecting old uniforms and soccer shoes for the YUWA program. YUWA was started by a couple of Edina grads who now work with girls in India to promote their education. Soccer is a big part of this program. You can bring donations to the Park & Rec office at City Hall during their normal business hours of 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Collections will be taken until the end of June.
From the President of ESC:
I am proud to congratulate the Edina Soccer Club teams that were awarded this year's Outstanding Ambassadors of Teams Honoring Sportsmanship (OATHS) Award. This accolade is bestowed upon teams by MYSA whose players, coaches, and cheering sideline parents demonstrate responsible, respectful, championship behavior that should be modeled by all teams. Referees throughout the state supply data to MYSA relative relative to which teams are worthy of consideration for the award. The Edina Summer 2011 team recipients were the following:
U14 Girls C1 Sting coached by Simon Whitehead
U14 Boys C1 Sting coached by Nate Hitch
U16 Boys C2 Sizzle coached by Mohamud Ali
Kudos to all of you, and we could not be more proud of what you have accomplished!
Kind Regards, Brent Rundquist, ESC President
